The reality of and the means to fight against modern slavery: a press release

Wednesday 10 October 2007

Trafficking in human beings is a growing phenomenon worldwide. As transnational organized crime it generates, according to the International Labour Organization, up to 27 billion euro in annual turnover, placing it just behind trafficking in drugs and weapons.Trafficking in human beings affects 137 countries identified as destination countries and 127 countries as countries of origin. In 2005, the ILO estimated that between 800,000 and 2.4 million people are victims of trafficking every year. Sexual exploitation, forced labor, domestic servitude, removal of organs, are among the various forms of trafficking that seriously harm fundamental human rights and dignity.

The Collective "Together against trafficking in human beings", aware of the need to act as a networknetwork, was created to fight effectively against all forms of this scourge. It brings together 23 French associations, engaged directly or indirectly with victims in France or in countries of transit and origin of trafficking. Determined to fight against the commodification of the person the, Collective has two principal aims: to raise public awareness of this complex issue and to persuade political, French and European policymakers to commit themselves strongly against this crime.
